Podle Foucaulta si historie nevystačí s tím, že by z monumentů a pramenů vytvářela a sbírala dokumenty. Stopa již není jednoznačným dokumentem určitého vývoje, ale vyvolává otázky po tom, jak a za jakých podmínek dané dokumenty vznikly. Stejně tak i fotografie již není jednoduchým dokumentem (například portrétem někoho), ale klade si otázky po kulturních, institucionálních, ale i třeba i technologických předpokladech fotografie.
According to Foucault history now does not consist in transforming monuments and sources into documents. Traces do not present straightforward documents of specific historical events, but they pose questions concerning how and under what conditions the document itself has been formed. Likewise the photography is not mere document of its content (portrait of someone for instance), but it asks questions about its cultural, institutional, or even technological predispositions.
