Narodil se do německy mluvící polské rodiny, která emigrovala do Francie. Jako mladý opustil Evropu a odjel za starší sestrou do Chicaga, kde přijal jméno Israel Schuklerski. Zde se živil jako herec v německých divadlech. V roce 1910 spolu se ženou, profesionální fotografkou otevřel fotografické studio.
V roce 1915 se vrátil do Berlína a usadil se v Berlíně. Působil zde po následujících 20 let jako kameraman. V roce 1931 opustil Evropu a usadil se v Palestýně, kde zůstal do roku 1948. Zemřel v Zurichu ve Švýcarsku.
