Usher’s work is primarily about the relationship between perception and memory. He creates forms that have a number of different associations, thereby asking viewers to reassess their initial reactions to the work. Usher starts out by making glass rods, placing them in a mould and heating them slowly so that the molten glass fills the void. The piece is then left to cool slowly, a process that can take up to 30 days. Usher then works on it using different grades of diamond pads, grinding and polishing the glass to the desired finish.
