Born 1928 in Dumyat Egypt, he studied Electrical Eng. at University of Alexandria where he recieved the B.Sc. and M.Sc. in 1951,1953 respectively. Due to the military government he could begin his Dr.sc.techn. degree study at ETH only in 1962 which he finished in 1965.In 1966 and 1967 he was chief assistant and lecturer at at ETH. From 1967 till 1968 he was Assistant Professor at Qeen's University, Canada. In1968 he was elected Professor of Automatic Control at ETH. His main research interests were stability theory, digital control, digital filters and their applications in technical and nontechnical systems. He was visiting Professor at IBM Research Lab. California, University of Florida, University of Illinois at Urbana, University of California Berkeley, Australian National University and Tokyo Instiute of Technology.
At ETH he was member of the computer committee, Admission Committee, President of the supervisory committee of the Instiute of Operation Research and Dean of Electrical Eng. On the national level he was President of the Swiss Society of Automatic Control and member of the Senate of the Swiss Academy of Natural Scieces.On the international level he was among others member of the council and treasurer of the International Federation of Automatic Control(IFAC), member of the evaluation committee of the Research Program "Control of Complex Systems" of the German Research Council, member of the Scientific Committee on Fuzzy Control of the Government of Westfalia, chairman of the "Awards and Nominations" committee of IEEE Control Systems Society, Chairman of the committee of Eng. Sciences of the Third World Academy of Sciences(TWAS), Delegate of IFAC and TWAS to the United Nations, member of the Editorial Boardmail of several International Journals and Book series, Advisor to UNESCO and IFAC, Chairman and Honorary Chairman of several International Conferences. He got several International Awards and Honorary Degrees.
